R.I.P. Big Duke: 3D Realms Bites The Bullet
Duke Nukem Forever is finally dead. Probably forever. Maybe.
In 1997, 3D Realms announced a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D - a game which artfully combined shooting alien pigs with throwing money at sexy bitches. What followed was a ridiculous sequence of bugger all, with the game subjected to endless delays and constant mumblings from the developers about it being released “when it’s done”. Frustrated and angry, gamers have remained ever hopeful - even in the face of overwhelming evidence - that the game would appear. Occasionally screenshots would pop up and tease the fanbase by looking awesome, but no actual game.
12 years later, long after the saga became a meme of its own, 3D Realms has shut up shop permanently (if they ever even existed) and killed Duke Nukem by extension. They have cited lack of funding as the reason, although perhaps they just ran out of the hot air they used to keep the company afloat.
Of course, the rights to the game are still held by Take-Two Interactive, so they may see fit to continue the running joke. Farewell Duke, we loved your rippling chest and your super buff heart.
